We Need Your Help
Are you someone who cares about people in crisis? Do you want to make a difference in your community? The Walk Them Home Campaign needs you.
What Is Walk Them Home?
Walk Them Home is a program that helps people when they’re going through tough times. We work to make sure everyone can get the help they need and find their way back to safety.
We help:
- People without homes
- People with memory problems like dementia or Alzheimer’s
- People dealing with mental health challenges
- First responders like police, firefighters, and paramedics who help others but often need help themselves
Why First Responders Need Our Help
The people who protect us every day face serious mental health problems. Here’s what the numbers show:
- 30% of first responders develop mental health issues like PTSD or depression (compared to 20% of regular people)
- Up to 25% of paramedics and EMTs get PTSD during their careers
- Firefighters are four times more likely than other people to get PTSD
- Police officers often have PTSD rates between 20-30%
- First responders are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than other people
- More police and firefighters die by suicide than die while doing their jobs
One study in Arkansas found that among first responders:
- 26% had PTSD symptoms
- 28% had anxiety
- 14% had serious depression
- 31% drank too much alcohol
- 93% had trouble sleeping
- 34% were at risk for suicide
The Problem: Many Don’t Get Help
Even though first responders need help, many don’t get it because:
- They worry it will hurt their careers
- Their workplace culture makes them feel like they should be tough
- They don’t have support from their bosses or coworkers
- Less than half of first responders who need mental health care actually get it
